Call for public consultation before social distancing one-way scheme is made permanent

A Wiltshire councillor is calling for public consultation before it is decided whether to make the social distancing one-way road system in Bradford on Avon permanent.

Cllr Sarah Gibson, who represents the south ward on Wiltshire Council and on Bradford on Avon Town Council for the Liberal Democrats, helped to introduce the controversial scheme in August.

She said: “It’s still temporary under a temporary traffic order. If it is up to me, before any application to make something like this permanent, a comprehensive community engagement exercise is needed so that the differing opinions can be heard. Nothing should be imposed on residents. The scheme as it stands lacks traffic calming measures, crossings and a review of speed limits.”

She was speaking after white road markings appeared at the junction of Masons Hill and the road to Newtown and Turleigh, indicating stop and turn right.

As soon as the requirements for social distancing are no longer required it is intended that the one-way scheme should be removed.

When the scheme was launched, Wiltshire Council said it could last from six to 18 months, depending on how long the pandemic goes on for and any guidance issued by central government.

The temporary scheme has been amended on several occasions in response to residents’ feedback to ensure that it remains safe for all users.
