Controversial plans to replace children’s centres put on hold

Controversial plans to replace the county’s children’s centres have been put on hold.

Bucks County Council has announced it needs to carry out more public consultations regarding the closure of 35 children’s centres, so will not be implementing the decision made in January to push forward with the plans.

Cabinet member for children’s services, Warren Whyte, said public meetings have been put on hold “for the time being” and new dates will be publicised in the coming weeks.

He said: “We recognise the strength of feeling amongst families and the local community about the changes we are proposing and want to continue to have these discussions.

“Therefore, we will consult further with residents. No public meetings will take place for the time being, and we expect to publicise new dates for these as part of the new consultation process.

“I hope residents and families will feel reassured that we are listening to their concerns and want to work with them to shape the support for families going forward.”

In January plans to replace the county’s children’s centres with nine “community team bases” under the council’s early help scheme were given the green light, despite strong opposition from campaigners.
