A protest was held today at Grimsby Town Hall by local residents who claim that “they have no confidence in the council.”
Although a much larger group of people was expected, a small number turned out to make their feelings about the council heard, as they complained about recent council decisions that they felt were “wasting their council tax.”
One of the main talking points in the agenda was the lack of recycling in the community, with many residents saying this was the main concern over the change of the fortnightly bins.
Residents felt that the council’s consultation process regarding the bin collections was flawed, and sought to give them the answer that the council wanted, rather than the people, as they complained they were only given the option for three weekly collections alongside fortnightly.
Protest organiser Carl Robertson said: “We are all sick of the council wanting money, they are reducing bin collections and our library services, along with many other things. It’s time we had our voice back in the council.”
Mr and Mrs Johnson of New Waltham also took part in the protest.
“We went to Mablethorpe on Sunday and the public toilets were free and immaculate, but ours they’re always closed and if they are open they are disgusting,” they said.
“If you are a tourist coming from Yorkshire for example, where are you supposed to go? In our resorts they are the worst of the worst.”
They also complained about the grass being cut in front of their garden with it being left all “scruffy and untidy”.
Another angry protester simply said: “We are here today because we have no confidence in the council. No matter what they do it does not seem to be done right.
“Their consultation processes are a farce, just designed to give them the answer they want.
“I just don’t know where all the money is being spent, in Scunthorpe you get free parking for two hours and lots of other services we lack.”
North East Lincolnshire Council declined to comment on the protest.
