Council’s Highways department makes consultation blunder

LEICESTERSHIRE County Council has apologised after it erected a street sign warning of road humps in town, before the whole legal notification process had even ended.

A series of new road signs and bollards have been erected in Loughborough’s High Street and Woodgate in a bid to deter motorists using the roads as a rat run.

The county council recently announced that it planned to install two “speed cushions” to act as a “physical and visual deterrent.” But as yet the humps have not yet appeared.

A public consultation regarding the humps closed on March 14 and last week the Echo contacted the council to ask if the speed cushions were still going ahead and were told: “We’ve not made any decisions at this stage as we are currently assessing the responses from the recent consultation.”

However over the next few days it transpired that the authority had already erected a road hump warning sign in Woodgate, before the whole legal process had been completed.

According to the authority the scheme received no objections during the formal consultation period, however, following this, the council put out a legal notification and it was during this period that three objections were received.

Now it has apologised with a spokesperson saying: “We apologise for any confusion caused – the signs were ordered and displayed to the public before the scheme was signed off. They will now be covered until a decision has been made.”

In the meantime despite the obviously clear new warning signs in High Street and three new sets of markings on Woodgate, drivers are still flouting the restrictions.

Motorists are banned from using the road except for access, but, as the Echo has highlighted for the past three years, drivers have been ignoring the notices.

They have been using it as a shortcut, through Baxter Gate to get to the town’s inner relief road.

Before the Inner Relief Road was built, drivers were allowed passage through High Street and Baxter Gate.

Since the Jubilee Way was completed in March 2014, signs have been in place advising drivers not to use the route, unless for access.

The Echo first highlighted the issue as far back as March, 2015.
