Developers hoping to build a retail park in Porthmadog have been accused by a local resident of not respecting the Welsh language.
Morbaine Limited is intending to apply for outline planning permission for a development on land at Penamser Estate for two non-food retail units, one with ancillary garden centre, a hotel with a café/restaurant and associated parking.
The developers have now launched a public consultation, but the website handling this, is only in English.
The process has angered Porthmadog resident, Nia Jeffreys, who says the developers need to “respect” the Welsh language.
She said: “This could be an opportunity for new jobs in Porthmadog – but we need to weigh up very carefully any benefits against the impact on our high street.
“I am pleased that local people will have the chance to have their say on this potential development on Penamser Road, but I am disappointed that the consultation website is in English only
“The company tell me that it is “not a requirement to have a Welsh consultation website” but with such a high percentage of Welsh speakers in Porthmadog this is not good enough in my opinion.
“Any company wanting to build a development like this in Porthmadog should respect our town and our language.”
Andrea Kellegher, from Turley Planning Consultancy, acting on behalf of Morbaine Ltd, said they were looking into ways of making their website bilingual.
