Developers have revealed plans to build hundreds of new homes on green belt land in Failand.
Harrow Estates has launched a major consultation on its vision to build up to 500 homes over 40 hectares of land – which would see the size of the village double.
The development would be spread over three sites bordering the ‘Failand Triangle’ all of which are currently in the green belt.
The vision details plans for a new primary school, affordable housing and highways improvements and links.
The proposal also includes new sporting and community facilities and a new post office.
A ‘vision document’ has now been submitted to North Somerset Council.
As yet, no planning application has been made.
A consultation on the vision has now been launched by Harrow Estates, which is part of the Redrow Group.
The consultation, which will run online due to the current pandemic, runs until February 22.
The proposal is being put forward at the same time as North Somerset Council is starting to draw up its Local Plan for the area up to 2038.
A spokesperson for Harrow Estates said: “We are hosting an initial consultation with the community and stakeholders alongside the promotion of the sites through the emerging North Somerset Local Plan 2038. There is no planning application in preparation. We are simply looking to engage openly and transparently with all at the earliest opportunity. We believe that developing land in Failand, which is in a sustainable location, will support improvements to an existing important transport corridor, increasing the opportunity for more regular public transport services and providing additional social infrastructure in the village.”
The news has already sparked concern among parish leaders who are planning to organising a public meeting on zoom about the scheme.
A spokesman for Wraxall and Failand Parish Council said: “Wraxall and Failand Parish Council has always firmly opposed any large scale housing developments proposed in the parish, but recognise the need to engage with any potential developer at an early stage.”
In 2009 a planning application was submitted for up to 500 houses to be built on land east of Failand.
Development company, FLP, submitted outline plans for 500 homes, 60 elderly care apartments, a primary school, employment spaces, convenience store, doctors surgery and village green.
North Somerset Council refused the plans and the developers went to appeal. However the application was turned down by the planning inspector on appeal.
