In-House Training
Tailored training delivered at your location for teams of 5+. From half-day workshops to multi-day programmes, we bring expert consultation training directly to your organisation.
Build Team-Wide Capability
When your whole team trains together, you develop shared language, consistent standards, and collective confidence in running consultations. No more disconnected approaches or confusion about process. Everyone leaves aligned on what good consultation looks like and ready to deliver it. Training 10 staff in-house costs less than sending them individually to public courses and they learn together.
Work on Your Real Projects
We don't use generic case studies. Bring your live consultation projects, your trickiest stakeholder challenges, your specific legal or governance context. We'll work through them together, so your team learns by solving actual problems they're facing right now. The training becomes immediately actionable because it's designed around your organisation's real-world needs.
Learn from Experienced Practitioners
Our trainers have led contentious public consultations across health, local government, infrastructure, and emergency services. Drawing on 22 years of Institute experience, we've trained over 1,200 delegates and share hard-won insights - including what works when things go wrong. Recognised by the High Court and trusted by over 100 public sector organisations including 66 local authorities, 30 NHS bodies, and 10 Fire and Rescue services.
Flexible to Your Schedule and Budget
Choose half-day workshops for targeted skills or multi-day programmes for comprehensive capability building. Deliver on-site, virtually, or hybrid. Schedule around your team's availability and peak periods. Keep your team together without sending them to external venues. After training, we provide a detailed report with tailored recommendations for next steps and continued development.

How In-House Consultation and Engagement Training Works
1. Initial Discussion - We discuss your consultation and engagement needs
Before we design your training, we’ll have an initial conversation to understand your team’s specific challenges and what you’re looking to achieve. We’ll discuss:
- The types of consultation and engagement activities you run and the sectors you work in
- Current capability levels and any skills gaps you’ve identified
- Specific challenges you’re facing (legal compliance, meaningful engagement, stakeholder relations)
- Live projects we can use as case studies during the training
- Your team size, roles, and experience levels
- Practical considerations: timing, location, format preferences
This discussion is free and helps us ensure the training will deliver exactly what your organisation needs.
2. Tailored Design - We customise consultation and engagement content to your context
We (typically) don’t deliver off-the-shelf courses. Based on our discussion, we’ll design a bespoke training programme that reflects your organisation’s needs:
- Case studies and scenarios drawn from your sector and project types
- Examples that reflect your governance framework and legal context
- Focus on the specific consultation and engagement methods and challenges you face
- Content pitched at the right level for your team’s experience
- Integration of your live consultation and engagement projects so learning is immediately actionable
You’ll receive a detailed programme outline showing exactly what we’ll cover, the learning outcomes, and the agenda for the day.
3. Delivery - Expert consultation and engagement practitioners train your team
Our trainers are experienced consultation and engagement practitioners, not generic facilitators. They’ve led formal public consultations, designed complex engagement programmes, and understand what works when building relationships with communities and stakeholders.
Training is highly interactive – we use discussion, group work, and problem-solving exercises rather than lectures. Your team will work through real scenarios, including your own consultation or engagement projects if you choose to share them.
We deliver:
- On-site at your offices for face-to-face learning
- Virtually via MS Teams with breakout rooms and collaborative tools, where needed
- Hybrid for teams in multiple locations
Sessions can be half-day, full-day, or multi-day programmes depending on your needs and objectives.
4. Follow-up - Post-training support for your consultation and engagement work
Learning doesn’t stop when the training ends. After your session, you’ll receive:
- Detailed training report summarising what was covered, key discussions, and observations about your team’s capability
- Tailored recommendations for next steps, areas for further development, and how to embed the learning
- Training materials including templates, checklists, and resources your team can use on live consultation and engagement projects
- Follow-up support – we’re available for questions as your team applies what they’ve learned to their consultation and engagement work
We can also discuss options for ongoing support, refresher sessions, or advanced training as your team’s capability grows.
Â
Bring your team together for focused, in-person training that turns consultation theory into practice. Step away from day-to-day noise, build a shared language, and leave ready to run consultations that are lawful, transparent, and defensible.
Sessions are led by senior practitioners and shaped around your goals. We cover consultation law and the Gunning Principles, governance and sign-off, equality and inclusion, and stakeholder engagement in contexts like health, local government, and infrastructure. Expect short briefings, real discussion, and hands-on work using your live projects—so decisions move forward on the day.
The Value of In-Person Delivery
You decide the focus.  For some teams, that means building confidence in legal duties and knowing exactly when and how they apply.  Others want to embed equality considerations from the start, improve stakeholder mapping, or address sector-specific challenges in health, local government, or infrastructure.
Whatever your priorities, we design the session to reflect your context and meet your objectives.  Training in-house is cost-effective when you want to develop whole teams, removing the need for multiple delegate bookings.  It also creates the space for open discussion, peer learning, and real-time problem-solving — the kind of interaction that is harder to achieve in a virtual setting.Â
Duration and Format
Sessions can run for half a day or a full day, depending on the depth of content and group size.
We recommend including time for discussion around live projects so participants can immediately apply what they learn.
Preparing for Your Session
Before booking, think about the impact you want the training to have.
- Do you have a live project that could be used as a case study?
- Is there a specific risk to address, or is the aim to raise overall capability?
- Who needs to be in the room to make sure the learning sticks?
- The clearer the brief, the more targeted and valuable the session will be.
