Why Professional Accreditation Matters

In an increasingly complex regulatory environment, organisations need assurance that their consultation practice meets legal standards and best practice. Professional accreditation demonstrates:

  • Independent validation of your skills by industry experts
  • Understanding of legal duties including Gunning Principles and equality requirements
  • Ability to design, deliver, and evaluate defensible consultations
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development

For individuals, certification provides career credibility. For employers, it reduces legal risk and strengthens governance. For organisations you consult with, it builds trust.

Increasingly, consultation expertise is a requirement in NHS and local government job descriptions. Our certification is recognised across 66 local authorities, 30 NHS bodies, and 10 Fire and Rescue services.

The Advanced Certificate in Consultation and Engagement Programme

Over 13 weeks, you’ll develop comprehensive expertise in:

  • Legal Framework – Judicial review, Gunning Principles, statutory duties, PSED
  • Strategic Planning – Scoping, governance, stakeholder mapping, risk management
  • Engagement Design – Methods, accessibility, equality, digital tools
  • Delivery Excellence – Project management, communication, facilitation
  • Analysis & Reporting – Quantitative and qualitative analysis, decision support
  • Implementation – Change management, evaluation, continuous improvement

The programme is mapped to real consultation lifecycles, so you learn
to apply knowledge at every stage from initial planning through to
post-decision evaluation.

Many participants have their fees covered by their employer as part of professional development budgets. We can provide a business case template and supporting information to help you make the case to your manager or L&D team. The certificate demonstrates value to employers by reducing legal risk, improving consultation quality, and building internal capability. Some participants also use apprenticeship levy funds where applicable. Contact us at hello@consultationinstitute.org for support with your funding request.

We understand that work and personal circumstances can change. If you need to pause your studies, you can defer to the next available cohort (usually starting 3-4 months later) without penalty, provided you notify us before Week 7. If unforeseen circumstances arise mid-programme, we’ll work with you to find a solution – this might include catching up on missed content, extending your submission deadline, or deferring specific modules. Contact the programme team as soon as you know you need support and we’ll discuss your options.

Short courses and workshops focus on specific skills or topics and are typically completed in a day or two – they’re ideal for targeted learning. The Professional Certificate is a comprehensive qualification that covers the entire consultation lifecycle, develops both breadth and depth of expertise, includes formal assessment, and provides independent accreditation of your competence. Think of workshops as building blocks for specific skills, while the certificate is a structured programme that demonstrates mastery across all aspects of consultation and engagement practice. Workshops are great for filling gaps; certification is for career progression and formal recognition.

The programme is open to all experience levels – we’ve had participants ranging from those new to consultation through to very experienced practitioners. If you’re relatively new, you’ll build expertise through the structured curriculum, learn from experienced peers in your cohort, and have support from mentors. Your assessment portfolio can be based on smaller-scale projects, simulated scenarios, or work you undertake during the programme itself. Many participants find that having less experience actually allows them to learn best practice from the start, rather than having to unlearn bad habits. If you’re concerned about your readiness, take our Individual Skills Assessment or speak to the tCI team.

Yes – while the majority of participants work in UK public sector organisations (NHS, local government, fire and rescue, infrastructure), we welcome applications from anyone working in consultation and engagement. This includes:

  • Private sector consultancies working with public bodies
  • Third sector and community organisations
  • International public sector professionals
  • Academics and researchers in this field
  • Those transitioning into consultation roles from other sectors

The principles, legal framework, and best practice we teach are applicable across sectors. If you’re uncertain whether the programme is suitable for your context, contact us to discuss – we can usually adapt examples and assessment requirements to fit different organisational settings.

We recommend planning for 1-6 hours per week, with the commitment varying depending on:

  • Your current workload and how much you can integrate programme learning with your day job
  • Your existing level of knowledge (those newer to consultation may need more time initially)
  • Which week you’re in (some weeks are lighter on content, others require more engagement)

Typically, participants spend:

  • 1-2 hours on online learning modules
  • 2-3 hours on interactive sessions (scheduled in advance, usually evenings)
  • 1-2 hours on portfolio development and reflection

The blended format gives you flexibility – most online content can be completed at times that suit you. The key is consistent engagement rather than intensive bursts. Many participants find they can complete much of the learning during work time as it directly applies to their role.
