How often is success measured by the participation your engagement or consultation project achieves?

For some it is about the numbers that participate, for others it is who you have involved, for good practice it is a combination of the two.

Planning and Delivering a Project for Better Participation is designed to enable those planning and delivering projects to achieve the representation that is needed to ensure a project is both credible and good practice.

Participants will start with considering why better participation is important and what ‘better’ looks like in different scenarios. Through a combination of exercises, deliberation and instruction they will explore:

  • How we should be thinking about participation
  • How to reach different groups and profiles of people
  • What forms of engagement work for different people
  • What persuades people to participate
  • What ensures that people will agree to your holding their data and being reinvolved
  • How we treat participants after the event
  • How people look at data
  • Data types (quantitative/qualitative)
  • Basic statistical techniques for use in the analysis of quantitative data (including weighting, and measurement of error)
  • Techniques for analysing qualitative data
  • How to consider, contextualise and combine quantitative and qualitative data
  • Synthesis and reporting of data (including models of best-practice reporting)
