Budget consultation backlash saves public toilets

More than half of Moray’s public toilets will remain open following a backlash during budget consultations.

The council originally wanted to shut all 32 locations across the region during their initial proposals.

Now it has been decided that 20 of the sites will remain open, at least one in every community, after the authority bowed to public opposition.

Council leader George Alexander said: “It’s not something we wanted to do but, given the financial position the council was and still is in, we had to make unpopular choices,” he said.

“However, the responses we received during our consultation on budget measures were based on sound argument and we decided to keep open those which were either on a tourism route or were heavily used in certain locations.

“I would hope that, as we undergo a similar further public consultations later this year, people will see that what they say does make a difference and that all voices are listened to.”

The 12 facilities that will still close are Strathlene Beach and the Town House in Buckie, Fiddich Park in Craigellachie, the harbour and West Beach in Cullen, Middle Block in Findhorn, The Leys in Forres, East Beach in Hopeman, Mid Street, Reidhaven Square and St Rufus Park in Keith and Station Park in Lossiemouth.
