Associate Spotlight: Bethan Williams Price

I’ve been an Associate with tCI for a couple of years now and at the beginning of a new year I thought it was a good time to introduce myself.

I come from a broadcasting background. I worked as a journalist for BBC Wales for over 25 years reaching the level of north Wales News Editor, and Training manager for a 300 strong newsroom across Wales. Having worked in newsrooms in south and north Wales I know how Wales works and I have very strong contacts. Beyond my newsroom career, I worked for 8 years as Head of Centre, North Wales leading the 100 BBC Wales staff based across north Wales in all departments. This gave me additional strategic experience and skills to work internally and with key external stakeholders.

I’m often asked about my highlights as a journalist. I covered riots, I was in court when the Birmingham 6 were released, I often covered for the sports correspondent becoming one of the first women to cover sports news on tv in Wales and subsequently ended up doing a Welsh language rap with Frank Bruno! My hardest assignments were covering a child abuse inquiry and numerous murder cases.

“Communication is at the heart of everything I do, and I bring those communication skills firmly with me to the Consultation Institute.”

I enjoy taking on the role of the lay person when teams are putting together their consultation documents. If I don’t understand what they are trying to say, I often refer to Mrs Jones from X and ask, “would Mrs Jones from Carmarthen understand that sentence”. If the answer is no, I enjoy trying to simplify the content to make it public facing.

My added skill is that I am totally bilingual – Welsh and English. I’m a great believer that English documents should never be translated literally. The Welsh version needs to read as a document written in Welsh and not translated from English.

In a nutshell I am a people’s person, and I put the public centre stage in any consultation I’m involved with. 2024 looks busy and hopefully I will get the chance to work with many of you over the coming months. You just need to be ready to work with me, and Mrs Jones!

Dod i adnabod un o’n Hymgynghorwyr Cysylltiol – Bethan Williams Price

Rydw i wedi bod yn Ymgynghorydd Cysylltiol (Associate) gyda tCI ers cwpwl o flynyddoedd bellach ac ar ddechrau blwyddyn newydd fel hyn be well na sôn rhywfaint am fy hanes i chi ddod i fy adnabod yn well.

Dwi’n dod o gefndir darlledu. Gweithiais fel newyddiadurwr i BBC Cymru am dros 25 mlynedd gan gyrraedd lefel Golygydd Newyddion Gogledd Cymru, a rheolwr Hyfforddiant ar gyfer ystafell newyddion o 300 o bobl ledled Cymru. Ar ôl gweithio mewn ystafelloedd newyddion yn y Gogledd a’r De, dwi’n gwybod sut mae Cymru’n gweithio ac mae gen i gysylltiadau eang. Y tu hwnt i fy ngyrfa yn yr ystafell newyddion, bûm yn gweithio am 8 mlynedd fel Pennaeth y Gogledd i BBC Cymru gan arwain y 100 o staff mewn amrywiol adrannau sydd wedi’u lleoli ar draws gogledd Cymru.  Rhoddodd hyn y cyfle i mi ddatblygu sgiliau strategol ychwanegol yn fewnol a hefyd i weithio gyda rhanddeiliaid allanol allweddol.

Mae pobl yn holi’n aml am fy uchafbwyntiau fel newyddiadurwr. Bûm yn gohebu ar derfysgoedd, roeddwn i yn y llys pan ryddhawyd y Birmingham 6, roeddwn i’n aml yn llenwi rôl y gohebydd chwaraeon gan ddod yn un o’r merched cyntaf i weithio fel gohebydd chwaraeon ar y teledu yng Nghymru a arweiniodd at rapio yn Gymraeg gyda Frank Bruno! Y straeon anoddaf oedd ymchwiliad cam-drin plant a nifer o achosion llofruddiaeth.

Mae cyfathrebu wrth wraidd popeth dwi yn ei wneud, ac mae’r sgiliau cyfathrebu hynny yn amlwg yn y gwaith rwyf yn ei wneud i’r Consultation Institute. Dwi’n mwynhau cynrychioli’r person lleyg pan fydd timau’n llunio eu dogfennau ymgynghori. Os nad ydw i’n deall beth maen nhw’n ceisio’i ddweud, rydw i’n aml yn cyfeirio at Mrs Jones o X ac yn gofyn, “a fyddai Mrs Jones o Gaerfyrddin yn deall y frawddeg honno”. Os na yw’r ateb, rwy’n mwynhau ceisio symleiddio’r cynnwys i’w wneud yn ddealladwy i bawb.

Ac i goroni’r cyfan, dwi’n gwbl ddwyieithog. Dwi’n grediniol na ddylai dogfennau Saesneg gael eu cyfieithu’n llythrennol. Mae angen i’r fersiwn Gymraeg ddarllen fel dogfen wedi’i hysgrifennu’n wreiddiol yn y Gymraeg ac nid yn gyfieithiad o’r fersiwn Saesneg.

Yn y bôn, person pobl ydw i, a dwi’n rhoi’r cyhoedd yng nghanol unrhyw ymgynghoriad dwi’n gweithio arno. Mae 2024 yn edrych yn brysur, a gobeithio y caf gyfle i weithio gyda llawer ohonoch dros y misoedd nesaf. Ond byddwch yn barod i weithio efo fi, a Mrs Jones!

Cysylltwch i glywed sut y gall arbenigedd Bethan fod o gymorth i’ch sefydliad neu brosiect.
