Aberystwyth councillors have accused the Post Office of not conducting a proper consultation on their move to WH Smith, and will appeal against the decision.
It was reported in the Cambrian News last week that the Post Office had confirmed they were moving from their Great Darkgate Street Crown Post Office location, to be incorporated into WH Smith, Terrace Road, despite massive opposition to the move.
Discussing the relocation at a town council meeting last week, councillors said they were “very disappointed” with the way the Post Office conducted their consultation.
“I am sure the council is very disappointed that the Post Office have moved to close the Great Darkgate Street Post Office, and move to WH Smith,” Cllr Ceredig Davies told councillors.
“They haven’t appeared to take any note of comments made by councillors and residents of Aberystwyth. I am very disappointed.”
And Cllr Brenda Haines said: “What annoyed me was that they said ‘following a consultation’, as if we had given permission. It was a done deal.”
And councillors agreed to appeal the decision with the Post Office.
Cllr Jeff Smith added: “They admitted there were over 600 responses to the consultation, and I am sure that most of those were negative.
“I feel they haven’t done their consultation right. There is an appeal body and I am going to write to them and challenge the way the consultation has happened.”
Mayor Cllr Brendan Sommers added: “They were recruiting people before the consultation had finished.”
