An Introduction to Co-Production.

Forty minutes on moving from doing to, to doing with.

Starting point No prior knowledge required
01 Why it matters

Where co-production fits

This e-learning course is an introduction to the background of co-production and explores the concepts and definitions around this particular engagement methodology. This foundation course will give you a grounding of co-production and an understanding of where it fits in to the wider engagement process.

You will learn the principles of co-production and how to build a co-production environment with the relationships and social capital to allow for co-production to be effective.

Produced by the Consultation Institute, with subtitles throughout. The intermediate course Co-production for consultation & engagement takes the same principles further with a trainer.

02 What topics will you cover?

Four topics, forty minutes

The principles come first, because the three topics after them assume you have them.

01
The principles of Co-ProductionThe six key principles the rest of the course builds on: recognising people as assets, building on their capabilities, mutuality and reciprocity, peer support networks, blurring the line between professional and service user, and facilitating rather than delivering.
02
Where the principles can be applied within consultation and engagementWhich parts of a consultation are open to a co-produced approach: framing the question and the options, designing the materials and the events, running the conversations themselves, and interpreting what comes back, along with the points where the decision has to stay with the authority.
03
The benefits of an asset-based approachStarting from what a community already has instead of what it lacks: the skills, groups, buildings and relationships already in place, how to map them, and why a needs-led framing tends to produce dependency where an asset-led one produces capacity.
04
The ways in which social capital underpins thisWhy the relationships have to be there before the work begins: bonding, bridging and linking capital, the trust that lets people speak candidly, and what it takes to build that stock in a community where previous consultation has left it depleted.
